Socially Useful and Productive Activity

Socially Useful and Productive Activity (SUPA) is a two-credit programme carried out during the Winter break for 18 days/ three weeks. The programme intends to give students an awareness and understanding of the NGOs involved in addressing social issues. It gives the students an opportunity to contribute to the society by helping the NGO they work with, in improving their functioning and system. Students are expected to identify the managerial problems of the NGOs and work to give an effective and efficient solution, as they work on their projects. They enhance the methods of volunteers and resource mobilisation for the NGOs. The also get involved in the day-to-day activities of the NGO to get a close understanding of their workings.

Students are expected to have a thorough understanding of the NGO before they join and work with them. They are expected to present a brief report of the NGO to the mentor before they leave for SUPA. They have to work under the guidance of the mentors in the NGO and at the campus. They need to submit a weekly report of the activities they are involved in along with the NGO. They have to make a comprehensive presentation of the experience at the NGO after they complete their SUPA with the NGO.

Students should understand the following about the NGO

History of the NGO – Its Vision, Mission and Objectives.

The scope of its operations, projects, programs, etc.

How they plan, organise, staff, direct, control, budget, report, etc.

What is the system and flow of work in the organization?

How Human Resources, Marketing, Finance and Operations are managed in the NGO. Check if the right scientific systems are in place for each functional area.

On a daily basis student will write a journal/diary of the events that happened in which they were part of, people whom they met and interacted with, managerial learnings that they observed, managerial lacunae they found in the NGO, best practices of the NGO and the benchmarks of the segments in which the NGO operates.

Preparation of Report

At the end of the SUPA, students will consolidate the three-four weeks experience and write a well-organized report. The report will contain the NGO details – history, projects, impact, and achievements, etc. Managerial learning from the experience, contribution in terms of systems developed, the website developed, budget generated, the fund raised, volunteering activities, etc. should also be included. And at the end how the NGO contributes to UN-SDG (Unsustainable development goals) and the society at large.

HIGHLIGHTS

We have students from over 22 states because of which we also refer to ourselves as “Mini-India”. The students in our institute connect with NGOs all around India so that they can connect to remote areas of every part. XIME Chennai has acquired a brand name all over the nation because of this special program. We take great pride in stating that our students (Keerthana V, Mercy, Jeena U, Uthra Jagadees, Priyanka S) have contributed in a significant manner during their SUPA project at AVATAR. The project they worked on is called project PUTHRI which aims at helping 10,000 underprivileged girl students. In appreciation of their contribution, XIME Chennai has been given an AWARD OF RECOGNITION by the organisation.
